Now, with Duke Nukem Forever on retail shelves, a source close to Gearbox reports that development on Borderlands 2 will be announced very soon - with release scheduled for next year.
Speaking to Eurogamer, the source has stated that title will be launching in 2012 for the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC, and that publisher 2K will make an announcement about it very soon.
Gearbox president Randy Pitchford has stated that he would love to work on more Borderlands content in the future but, since nothing has been formally announced, the game technically “does not exist”:
Rumors of a Borderlands sequel were first sparked when Borderlands 2 was seen on a game developer’s resume, as it seems most titles are outed these days. The title was speculated to have been announced at E3 in June, however was absent as Gearbox showed off the first footage for Aliens: Colonial Marines and Brothers In Arms: Furious Four.
Borderlands was both expansive and saturated with content, and proved to be 2009’s sleeper hit. Some thought that it would fail as it released at the same time as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 - however, the two games appealed to somewhat different markets at first. Then, the DLC expanded the game into interesting and new environments, though some of the DLC was arguably less exhilirating than others. Borderlands 2 would no doubt be a welcome announcement for fans of the original title, and with Gamescom around the corner, it is likely we could hear an announcement in the coming weeks.
