The new CoD title has been teasing a strong, narrative-driven campaign mode (despite the lack of focus on story in the recent featurette), but many consumers will be drawn to the shooter for the multiplayer experience. The creators of Advanced Warfare are fully aware of the focus on multiplayer in the CoD community and the team claims to have some big plans to take the competitive experience to the next level.
Sledgehammer co-founder Michael Condrey spoke to Metro about the changes to the franchise’s usual multiplayer offerings…
“Our multiplayer has what I’m going to call the biggest set of new, as you call it, cool gear that you’ve seen in a long time. It’s a big step forward, from three years in development we’ve been able to innovate across the game. Everything you saw [at E3]… just imagine what that’s going to mean for multiplayer. You’re going to find that new is what it’s all about.”
This may be Sledgehammer’s first time taking full control on a CoD project, but the team helped out on Modern Warfare 3, so it is certainly familiar with the usual format. The co-founders of the studio, Condrey and Glen Schofield, were fully aware of the complaints from Black Ops II fans that some of the coolest tech from the campaign had no role in multiplayer. The pair didn’t go into any details, aside from confirming that the exoskeletons would be included, but did promise that Advanced Warfare’s multiplayer will be full of the ’new.'
The team isn’t ready to spill the beans on multiplayer details just yet and the interview quickly turned back towards the campaign and the crazy near-future tech that it will feature. The tech that was revealed in the E3 preview mainly focused on the exoskeleton, but we also saw a directed energy weapon and walking tanks. The introduction of that kind of tech into multiplayer maps could definitely help to shake things up. As we draw closer to November, Sledgehammer will likely share a full list of the new tech available in the competitive mode.
What pieces of technology do you think should be included in Advanced Warfare’s multiplayer to help make the mode stand out from recent entries? Do you think the franchise is heading in the right direction or does the near-future setting seem a bit gimmicky? Let us know in the comments.
